Dayo Wong Tze Wah (Art of speaking)

Dayo Wong Tze Wah

Dayo Wong Tze-Wah is a famous Stand-up comedian, singer and actor in Hong Kong. He graduated from University of Alberta and then came back to Hong Kong to develop in the Showbiz. His first well-known piece is a stand-up comedy held in 1990s. After that, He has also been a main character of several hot and famous TV-series in Hong Kong like War of Genders, You're Hired, Men Don't Cry and To Catch the Uncatchable. But among all types of his art works, stand-up comedy is still the most famous one.

Stand-up comedy is a live show which first appeared in 1970s consisted mainly of a stand-up comedian and a microphone on a stage for getting the immediate laughs from audience by talking a series of humorous stories.

Since Dayo was the first one who held stand-up comedy in Cantonese in Hong Kong and there was no Chinese name for stand-up comedy in that time, he created one for it called dungduksiu (棟篤笑). Because of this history, nowadays people usually call him the father of dungduksiu.

The theme of Dayo’s stand-up comedy is exploring life through the common issues human beings have like global issues, jobs and relationships. Other than getting a laugh from audience, also lead them to think in their life about how to live in happiness and tolerance. So his stand-up comedies usually involve a lot of philosophies and truths. Since philosophies and truths are often recondite and abstract, in order to let everybody understand his views toward something, he always simplifies them into interesting words and also gives many relevant funny examples to the audience in his stand-up comedy. Therefore, his stand-up comedies are suitable to people from all age groups.

Most of the examples that appear in Dayo’s stand-up comedies are his self-experience in the past. When he prepares a script for a stand-up comedy, he just works in front of the desk for a whole year and think in what self-experiences can related to the show and how to make these experiences interesting. He does not copy other’s work from the internet, although his friend thinks it is not efficient to produce a stand-up comedy to earn money by thinking for a whole year. He thinks that stand-up comedy is used to make people happy. In order to surprise audience, innovation is important. All these things make his art work unique and specific.

Every time I watch Dayo’s stand-up comedy, I will think deeply about the message behind his words rather than just laugh loudly. So I have learnt many things from his show, for example, how to get along with family well. Dayo is just like our teacher and his show is our lesson, I like the lesson very much because it is very interesting and informative.

Usually, some audiences will suddenly ask him some questions in his show, but Dayo can always answer them humorously, this already becomes an unique characteristic of his stand-up comedy, I very admire him for his intelligence. He can change all the problem, audience’s question and even drinking water on the stage to be a part of performance. But there is one thing bad in his show, his show is going too fast, audience may not have enough time to digest all the philosophies thoroughly.

  2. I never thought about dungduksiu is a kind of art, and I would like to know which type of arts it belongs to? Performance art or other? And I think maybe giving actual examples for his speech is quite important for us to understand his art work.

  3. I am a fan of Dado and I think him show would be a entertainment rather than art work. It is similar to the critic comic in newspaper and show the paradox in daily. He is presenting the paradoxo in funny way but somehow he didn't the true mean of life. In fact I would say he is a actor rather than artist.

  4. In my opinion, it is quite different and should not be the focal point to differential art piece and commercial work because we do not know the real incentive or intention of the author. In general expressing self-reflection or feeling though a art work and earning money may be co-exist.
I appreciate Wong's performance due to its entertaining characteristics which provide joyous and belly-laugh to the public. Beside, this speech is full of sardonicism based on the current inequity or innocent of the society. Thus I think his art work i quote significant and have positive impact on us.

  5. Personally, I think you can write more in depth concerning on the issue upon how he is creating art, and artworks in his comedian shows, therefore, I think you will need to elaborate more upon this point. However, I do agree that his shows can be considered as art performance, because his performance is unique and entertaining. Moreover, the messages he wishes to send out during the shows are similar to that of painters and other types of contemporary artists. And that is to influence the audience and to allow them to see the world as how he personally sees it, and for Dayo, he wishes that his audience can challenge all their difficulties in life with joy, and look from a different and happier perspective.

  6. Kevin, I strongly agree with your comments about Dayo.
For me, I always learn a lesson and rethink about life from every laughter in his standing comedy. His art work often provides me food for thought. Most importantly, I learn these meaning lessons by heart since he presents them in an interesting way, his dungduksiu instead of lecturing me.

However, I suggest you to add more real life examples to illustrate your point of view towards Dayo's standing comedy instead of just mentioning your feeling and comments in general. For example, you can give specific examples concerning how did you learn from his art work to get along with family well as you mentioned above: So I have learnt many things from his show, for example, how to get along with family well.

Further, I would really want to know which standing comedy of Dayo do you like most among all his shows, and even which joke of him do you like most in the show. To be honest, I am a fans of him, too. My favorite comedy of Dayo is talking about virgin. Did you watch it? I consider it as a black comedy/dark comedy that inspires me a lot. It is about a virgin being locked up because of the background of his parents.

I post the link here for your reference.Watch it and feel free to share your ideas with me such as do you like it? do you think it is inspiring?

  8. I have watched some video clips about Dayo 's dungduksiu before.
it is funny, even drinking water can be included in performance.
Indeed I have learnt many things through his jokes, for example, how to interpret the misunderstanding between genders, that can remind me not to make those mistakes again.

Also, he has unique perceptive in the political and social issue.
Audiences can have their feelings in both emotional and rational.
this influence is similar to a famous contemporary artist.
